1. Your baby cries due to a feeling of hunger

Of course, you feed your baby several times a day and can't really imagine your baby being hungry. Yet this is cause number one of crying, especially when it comes to a newborn baby. Your baby only has a small stomach, so your baby may be hungry again sooner than you realize. A newborn baby is hungry again after two hours on average, which is much faster than adults. Is your baby crying? If so, offer bottle or breastfeeding. This is also called responsive feeding. You can use a maternity pillow to make it even more comfortable. Does this help? If so, chances are your baby was crying because its stomach started to grumble.

2. Your baby is suffering from colic

Why does my baby often cry after feeding? We also hear this question often. Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. After all, every baby is unique. One of the most common causes of crying after feeding is because your baby is suffering from colic, aka cramps. Your baby may even ball their fists, pull a crooked back, lift their knees and have a red face. This often indicates colic. In addition, your baby may also suffer from reflux. You can try using a reflux pillow to see if that reduces the crying after feeding. Do you find that your baby cries excessively after feeding? If so, it is always wise to visit your doctor just to be sure.

3. Your baby wants attention

A baby may also simply cry because your baby wants to be held. The smaller your baby is, the more physical contact your baby needs. A baby needs comfort, reassurance, safety and security. By holding and cuddling your baby, you give your baby the attention needed to convey these feelings. In addition, singing can also be a good option. Hold your baby close to you, gently dance with your baby and sing to your baby. This immediately helps strengthen the bond and it makes your baby feel very safe and comfortable.

4. Your baby needs rest

In the previous point, we mentioned that your baby may cry when he or she wants attention. On the other hand, it is also possible that your baby cries because he or she just needs rest. When your baby gets tired, your baby often starts to cry. Has it been a busy day, for example with many maternity visitors, and has the baby gone from person to person to get acquainted? Then your baby needs rest. By the way, this does not mean that your baby will fall asleep immediately after being put in the crib. In fact, overtiredness can cause your baby to have more trouble falling asleep. So don't worry about this.

5. Your baby is too hot or too cold

It is important for a baby that the temperature is comfortable. A temperature between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius in the baby's room is excellent. Is your baby crying and you don't know why? Then you can feel at the back of the neck or on the belly whether your baby feels warm or cold. Is your baby too cold? Then warm your baby with a soft baby blanket. Does your baby feel too hot? Try to cool your baby down. Do you think your baby feels very warm? Always measure the temperature. Is there a (high) fever? Then it is advisable to call the doctor for advice.

Is your baby too hot or too cold in the crib? Then it is often enough to add or remove a blanket layer, depending on the situation. In summer, it is often better to use well-breathed cotton sheets for your baby.

6. Your baby is not feeling well

A baby, like an adult, may just be uncomfortable. You become familiar with your baby's cry. At some point you ask yourself "Why is my baby suddenly crying differently? If so, the cause often lies in not feeling well. This is because when your baby is not feeling well, the baby lets out a different kind of cry. This may be higher pitched, continuous, more urgent or especially weaker. It can be a sign that your baby is feeling a little sick, but as your baby gets older it can also have to do with the first teeth coming through. No one knows your baby, and your baby's cry, as well as you do. If you feel that something is not right, always contact your doctor.

Why is my baby crying excessively?

There is another important difference between "Why is my baby crying?" and "Why is my baby crying excessively? Do you feel that your baby does cry a lot or that the crying sounds more intense than usual? Do you notice that your baby is having trouble breathing due to excessive crying? If so, always call for help immediately. This also applies if your baby has a fever of 38 degrees Celsius or higher (for babies younger than 3 months) or a fever of 39 degrees Celsius (for babies older than 3 months). Does your baby have constipation, diarrhea or excessive vomiting? If so, this is another good reason to call a doctor immediately.

In many cases, crying has to do with discomfort

In the vast majority of cases, crying has to do with some form of discomfort, i.e. being uncomfortable. This could be because your baby is just hungry, because your baby is too hot or too cold, or, for example, because your baby is just tired. You can increase your baby's comfort in several ways, such as using a baby wedge. Do you sense, or can you hear from your baby's cries, that something is not right?
